OFTEN IN MY DREAMS
by Rich Reith

Often in my dreams
I look back on
The carefree joy we had, the laughter,
The matchless pleasures of our lovemaking.
And my heart wonders….
Did you ever allow yourself to miss it as much as I?

All these years,
All my tears,
All the deprivation and emptiness,
After those years filled with dreams of love,
Of intimacy and joy
Of your commitment that ended all too soon.

At times the memories leave me breathless.
At times they ferry me to the depths of hell.
And all the time
I wish I never knew those early moments,
So I wouldn’t understand
the tragedy of my loss.

You look at me
With those eyes I thought I knew so well,
Eyes which held a lifetime of lies.
Now they are just scared.
The simple answers that once worked for you
Don’t.

All I can see is your fear.
Because now,
For once,
You don’t have an answer.
